The property is on the fourth floor without a lift, so not suitable for everyone, however the well-lit marble staircase with its wide landings is a pleasure. The balcony, looking over ruelle Halle aux Herbes, is perfect for basking in the afternoon sunshine and admiring the gorgeous Genoese tiled dome of Ste Reparate. As the upper floors of facing buildings are set back the balcony enjoys a surprising level of privacy for the area.
At the crossroads between France and Italy, the Alps and the Mediterranean sea: the Cote d'Azur.
With an average of 300 days of sunshine a year it's not surprising that this area has been attracting visitors for over 2,000 years, however these days the wild interior of Provence, with its national park, and the ski resorts of the lower Alps beckon as strongly as the sparkling coastline and nightlife, all within easy reach of Nice.
A magnet for artists and writers, the area abounds in museums, gardens, galleries. Choose a theme and make your own tour, using the excellent local bus and train networks, or join in with one of the many on offer locally.
Cannes, Antibes, Villefranche, Cap Ferrat, Monaco, Menton - all these legendary resorts are a short bus ride away on the spectacularly good value Ligne d'Azur network. Inland lie hilltop villages and towns steeped in history, culture and Provencal charm, not to mention Grasse, perfume capital of the world.
Information about: NICE
Wake to the sound of the bells of the ancient churches, step out of the apartment into the charming old streets and Italianate squares for a coffee and pastries from one of the wonderful boulangeries close by. Stroll on to the vibrant Cours Saleya market for stunning displays of flowers, fruit and local produce. Glimpse the turquoise surf of the Bay of Angels through the stone archways separating the market from the Promenade des Anglais and cross direct to the beach.
Meander back, taking in the superb architectural details of the old town, wonderful artisan shops and galleries lining its shady streets, the sound of cicadas mingling with the locals' dialect, and enjoy an aperitif on the balcony before your evening promenade among the bars and restaurants or along the seafront.
Tomorrow you might make the easy climb to the top of the Chateau Hill with its spectacular 360 views, cooling breeze and cascading waterfall; maybe let the petit train touristique take you for a lazy tour. Perhaps visit the Port area with its astonishing yachts, antiques and seafood restaurants; relax in the public parks and gardens lined with orange and lemon trees, bougainvillea, Bird of Paradise flowers, or, of course, on the beloved Promenade des Anglais, with its famous blue chairs, simply sit and gaze out over the sea and watch the world in all its variety go by.
